San Cristobal de las Casas

If there is a Mexican region were we can find a well preserved indigenous traditions, it is the State of Chiapas, that is at the same time one of the most beautiful and full of jungles (Montes Azules), Waterfalls (Agua Azul), deep abysms (Sumidero Canyon), and Colonial cities (San Cristobal) among other attractions. Here we can find a variety of unusual plants, and many animals like monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas, herons, kingfishers and a lot of birds, and of course Prehispanic architecture.
San Cristobal de Las Casas, located in the region known as "Los Altos de Chiapas". It has beautiful buildings from sixteenth to nineteenth Centuries, paving stone streets in the old "Barrio del Cerillo" and small plazas and houses with red roof patios full of flowers. It is famous due to its handcrafts. We will visit Ttzotziles communities of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán, Chenalho, Tenejapa, all a few miles from San Cristobal, which still keep their traditions, customs, believes and social organization.

Palenque

The Maya culture flourished and continues to exist in a region of Mexico and Central America often referred to as Mesoamerica. This encompasses the Yucatan peninsula and Tabasco and Chiapas of present day Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and the western parts of Honduras and El Salvador.
Palenque has everything as an archeological site, spectacular beauty on its well preserved buildings, a long and mysterious history with more than 2,100 years of Mayan culture and all of this surrounded by a breathtaking jungle paradise.
We will see The Palace, The Temple of the Sun, and The Temple of the Inscriptions with the world famous Tomb of Pakal, among others.
You'll be stoned without any doubt…

San Sebastian (Parachicos)

Every year in the city of Chiapa de Corzo, located 5 miles from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, are celebrated the festivities of San Sebastian. These festivities are very popular, in these days the "parachicos" go out in the street to dance. The Fair lasts for about a week and starts on January 15th and has its end on January 23rd.
In the first day we usually have the so called "Comida Grande" (the Grand Meal), this consists in salty mealt cooked with pumpkin seeds, this day the "parachicos" gather to dance. This is a three years promise made by them to San Sebastian. The "parachicos" usually exceed 1000 in number every year. There is a "parachico" captain who guards the flags from the different neighbourhoods of Chiapa de Corzo and they go dancing all over the city streets until they reach the Church of Santo Domingo, where the image of Sn. Sebastian is held. These events are called the "Downing of the Flags". In these days also men are dressed like women and dance with the women who are dressed with the traditional "Chiapaneca" dress. This is also a promise made to San Sebastian.
