CHOLULA-HUEJOTZINGO-PUEBLA

Day 1: Arriving to Mexico City and lodging at "Hotel Maria Cristina" at only a few steps away from Av. Paseo de la Reforma (Mexico City’s landmark avenue) or a similar hotel. Day 6: After breakfast at the Hotel we will go to the city of Puebla, "Wednesday ashes" and the town is full of rites, free time to make personal activities, at evening we will review the photographic material of the past days.
Day 2: Breakfast, and away to Puebla city, lodging and registration at Meson del Molino a splendid Hacienda that is an attraction by itself, it has one of the finest restaurants in Mexico. Then we will go to Cholula City where we will enjoy lunch and start our photographic activities.

Day 7: We will spend all day in Puebla, that was declared Human Heritage by UNESCO. Puebla is absolutely full of colonial monuments and during these days a lot of activities because of the carnival, so we'll have many nice opportunities to shoot our cameras.

Day 3: Breakfast at the Hotel and away to San Francisco Acatepec Chapel, Tonanzintla chapel and the convent at Huejotzingo, back to hotel for dinner.

Day 4: We will spend all this day at Cholula, very small town, but with more than 35 colonial churches and a very interesting Prehispanic site.

Day 5: This is the "main dish" of this trip, the Tuesday of Carnival (Mardi Gras). In any other part of Mexico we won't find something equal; we will see an indigenous representation of the famous Battle of Puebla against the French army, and two other representations of some local legends, also we will travel to the very near Tlaxcala where the dances are colorful.
Day 8: This will be our landscape opportunity, so wake up very early in the morning is a must, but as a reward we are going to have just for us the spectacular volcanoes "Popocatepetl & Iztacihuatl" (try to practice your nahuatl a little bit!!), don't worry we will not climb the mountains just getting around looking for nice views; bringing your telephoto would be a good idea. Back to hotel for a breakfast, take a little rest, enjoy the beautiful Hacienda or go shopping and finally the closing lunch, make our check-out and back to Mexico City, lodging at Hotel M» Cristina. End of Workshop.

Day 8: Transportation to the Mexico City airport.

Cholula

Cholula's prominence dates back over 2,000 years with archeological sites in the vicinity yielding links to the Teotihuacan and other local cultures. At the time of Cortes' arrival in Mexico, Cholula was a thriving economic and cultural center with over 100,000 inhabitants. The Cholultecas thought Cortes to be Quetzalcoatl and yielded easily to his demands. In spite of the easy conquest, Cortes' men destroyed the ceremonial temples and built churches in their place.
It is said, Cholula at one time had a church for every day of the year. The spires of these can be viewed as mounds from the top of the Cholula Pyramid, on which a church was also built. In actuality, there are close to forty churches in the area.

Huejotzingo

One of the most beautiful and original carnivals in Mexico is celebrated here before Ash Wednesday. The Jorongos and the rugs made of wool, are among the most outstanding handicrafts of Huejotzingo and of course the infamous apple cider.
Huejotzingo is one of the first monasteries built by the Franciscans;at the foot of the volcano Popocatepetl, dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the rambling monastery sits atop an ancient mound in the busy town center, secluded from the sounds and bustle of the street within its walled churchyard. The monastery is famous for its many outstanding examples of 16th century art and architecture: the elaborately carved corner chapels of the churchyard, the medieval church doorways spanned by Moorish arches and emblazoned with Franciscan escutcheons, and not least, the extraordinary murals that line the walls of the church and cloister.
