Zacatecas

Founded in 1546 after the discovery of a very rich silver lode, Zacatecas' prosperity reached its height in the 16th and 17th centuries. Built on the steep slopes of a narrow valley, the town offers a breathtaking panorama. Many old buildings, both religious and civil, remain. The Cathedral, built between 1730 and 1760, dominates the centre of the town. It is outstanding in its design and in its façades, which are decorated in both European and indigenous styles.
The Capital is at 2,496 meters above sea level, its climate is dry and moderated with an average of 16¼ celcius. It extends throughout a dell over very uneven terrain which fillst with lots of twists and turns, which made it take whimpsical forms, by far, its biggest charm.

Morisma

"La Morisma de Bracho" in Zacatecas is a spectacular and very picturesque festival. The tradition originated in medieval Spain after it was liberated from moslem domination.
Battles are staged that correspond to the VII and XVI centuries. Among the most important figures in the Battles are Charlemagne, Roland, and the twelve Peers of France, Admiral Balan, King Philip II of Spain and King Argel Osman. Last year in Zacatecas more than 7000 members of the St John the Baptist brotherhood participated. The "profession" of moor or christian begins in infancy, children of two years or less start wearing the colorful uniforms in the parades and end up in the arms of brothers and parents. They continue to be members of the brotherhood from the time they join it for the rest of their lifes. each year they take part in the "Morisma" regardless of where they be living.

La Quemada

La Quemada grew into the largest pre-Columbian settlement known in southern Zacatecas. Its original name is unknown; it was christened La Quemada by the early Spaniards who found evidence of a great conflagration.
The site museum has a scale model showing more than 50 terraces and about 1 km2 of constructions. Occupied from about 200 - 300 AD, its population peaked after 500 AD, before the site was abandoned about 1000 AD, 1000 years ago.
The residential elite lived on the edge of the hills.
A network of "roads", built of slabs and clay, extends from La Quemada to some 200 minor sites on the Malpaso valley floor. The site was built at different times, successive stages covering parts of previous constructions.
